"Who would have thought that this eclectic group of voyagers could actually become a family. Starfleet, Maquis, Klingon, Talaxian, hologram, Borg... even Mr Paris." |
Q2Just awful! Awful, just awful! This was TNG season one bad and even I thought those days were far behind us. Just about everything was a failure. I thought that the plot synopsis from a few weeks back sounded bad but I didn't think that it could get any worse or any more shallow than it was when presented in a synopsis. Oh sure, the Janeway in the bath scene was appreciated, but even THAT wasn't enough to save this episode, IMO the worst in recent memory. I have never been a big Q fan but even here I can recognize that Q was put to waste. The acting was just terrible and the lines and line delivery were squirm inducing. When it's all a loss the question is, was there potential here in the first place? I think so. A story of social lessons has worked before for Voyager and Mulgrew has proven comedic skills. But this wasn't a story about characters with any depth or any real appreciation of stake involved. Gimmick after gimmick and all for nothing. It was a disaster. I heard that Biller had this story idea soon after "The Q and Grey" but Braga and Menosky kept nipping it year after year everytime Biller brought it up. Looks like those two were doing something right after all. Jason Not Q, Too! Well, it wasn't very good but I'd hesitate to describe as awful as Jason did. The first half hour was perfectly dreadful but it did improve later. Echeb was good. Mostly, this show is just very forgettable. I did love Q's kissing Kate and then sharing a bubblebath with her. Biller didn't write this one, did he, Jason? I thought I caught Robert Dougherty's name on this one. Biller's protege has never impressed me ever since he won a job on the staff for writing VIS A VIS (go figure!). We've been hearing rumors about this Q show for years. What a disappointment! I've never been a huge Q fan but even I know the best Q shows just turn de Lancie loose and let him riff. Not expecting that much, I was entertained I thought this episode was pleasant enough...Baby Q's acting is limited but he's appealing and worked well with my favorite ex-Borg, Icheb... I also enjoyed the opportunity to see Janeway comically vexed...and the disco-warp-core room. An opportunity wasted? Perhpas...but only DEATH WISH was an ep that took Q on VOY seriously...i found this much more entertaining than INSIDE MAN, BODY AND SOUL, or even PROPHECY. i do think Levar Burton is better with drama...just like the (much worse) LIVE FAST...his comedy tempo is draggy. But Q2 kept me mildly entertained, and took itself with blessedly little seriousness. david g Would've been better had I not known the blow-by-blow synopsis Still "Q2" should be a great episode for those viewing it for the first time. Q junior is fun to watch; in fact, I'm all for TPTB replacing John de Lancie with Keegan de Lancie as Starfleet's new thorn-in-the-side. Speaking of which... What's up with Q's appearance? Q2! The titles are getting even shorter aren't they? Not to shabby! Which is pretty good for this season unfortunetly. The best part of this episode was watching the two Delancie's go to town and boy where they a blast. Keegan (was that his name?) will be just as good as dad if he decides to go into acting full time. Even Voyager's Wesley Crusher, Icheb was pretty good playing the straight man to Q although i cringed at Itchy and Q-Ball. This was a fun episode although it has the same problem as this whole season, good and bad, it's nothing when you hold it up to the microscope : When you remove the fun Q's there is nothing left of this episode, or the whole season for that matter. Hopefully Berman/Braga will see this problem when they start Series V! This is 2001 and you NEED a story line!!!! The lack of continuity has hollowed out Voyager till there is nothing left inside but empty air!! Eric He's credited for the story, but... Biller is known for keeping his name off scripts that Doherty's name is attached to. In most cases, Biller is more responsible for the final product. For instance, he was responsible for TSUNKATSE but Doherty was the sole credited writer. My suspicion is that the same is true of IMPERFECTION from earlier this season. Of course, all the senior writers re-wrote the stuff of the junior writers-- in most cases, heavily-- and kept their names off. Just some examples are Menosky for COUNTERPOINT (at least, according to Kate Mulgrew), Biller for BRIDE OF CHAOTICA! and Braga for a lot as well, which is not surprising given his hands on approach as former executive producer. But Biller is usually responsible for re-writing a lot of Doherty's scripts it seems and usually seems content to let him take the credit. (Or blame.) As for Q2, Bryan Fuller said in an interview that this episode was close to Biller and that he had championed it even though Braga and Menosky kept saying no to it. Jason Was it just me.... ...or did Tom's hair look like the landing deck of an aircraft carrier? Sorry, but that did come to mind. This was an okay ep. Predictable storyline with several good laughs. I think my favorite was "Maybe it's not too late to ask Jean-Luc." --Snort! That did put some ideas in my head, poor Picard. Kate in the tub was hilarious, as were the whole of KM's expressions this week--from bloodily contained rage, sarcasm and frustrations, to brutally wise, caring and, of course, utterly shocked. I never mind seeing that much in Janeway, even if the rest of the episode run along the tracks. Q Jr. was a cute kid I naturally just wanted to swat--but was much better in his moments of confession, which came off well. I liked how he responded to Janeway in those moments. Well, maybe it's not such a good thing. Those same moments that Q Jr. made me feel for his situation gave me glimpses into what more/different could have been done with the plot. Children being put onto pedestals of incredible expectation is one of those things that could have been more the focus than "Qs learn their lessons." In a way, it was, but just not enough to make that the theme. It was more like a teenage replay of Deja Q, instead--which I thoroughly expected with only the reading of the summary. Icheb's role in it was pretty transparent, too, where he could have been more of a mentor himself, rather than an accomplice. "Pedestals of expectation" could also have let Tom have a bit of say in the ep, too (even if I did like his teaching style But being this was Q, it just had to be the captain's main problem until some other poor person was nice to Q and got pulled into the mix and they had to make their "unselfish act." Been there, done that--and did that much better the first time. Not that I think it was a *bad* ep. If I hadn't seen this plot a few times already, I would have liked it more. I just couldn't help but think during the ep that it could have been different, a different angle. Q Jr's transformation into good human might have been less of an if/or/please then montage.... Ah well. I did get some good laughs out of it, and a couple genuine moments of feeling. Again, it was okay. I'll still wish they'd taken another angle with it, however. Next week: Oh my! Spoilies could not prepare me enough for those images. Should be interesting. If you take that as the theme... "Pedestals of expectation", I mean, then the ep would have been a serious one and it was meant to be a comedy one... Not necessarily. I understand they wanted a comedy, and were playing for a comedy. That certainly wasn't a question. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work because the plot outside that comedy wasn't enough to hold the rest up. I think their underlying theme was far too tested and tried to be as enjoyable as it could have been. Even a serious topic treated comdeically (which is certainly possible, given we're dealing with a teenager, much as PTBs in general often botch that process)--or with those essential Q-like funny parts is more welcome than more of the same with far less originality. When Q treated Picard to their first taste of the Borg, that was serious, though there were many laughs throughout. But it had a plot that held the comedy up as more than throwaway. It even ended on a thoughtful note, with Picard's noting "a kick in our complacency." I loved that observation. Unfortunately, I think TPTB need a kick in their own when they were developing this plot. They could have made it more thoughtful (and again, original) without giving up the fun that is usually Q, IMHO. (And now, back to, er, work. 2 Qute. C E What a guilty pleasure enjoying this episode was!!! It was trite, predictable, a little too cute at times (Itchy & Q-ball, etc...) but I just lapped it all up like a Nick at Night rerun. Of course I DID get to see Janeway reacting and responding in many different ways. I saw more of Janeway than I have in a long time, and that probably added to my delight. Janeway absolutely white with rage when she was in sick bay with a terrified Neelix. Janeway near tears of compassion when Q blew off the accomplishments of his son. Janeway bantering/sparring with Q in the bathtub, on the bridge, in her ready room. Janeway laying down the law with Q2, and then her slight smile indicating it was more of an act for Q2's benfit than genuine outrage. But I have to admit I thought the antics of Q2 were funny. "Aren't you going to scamper away (with hand motions) and make some futile attempt to cover yourself" he asks 7 after he strips her of her clothes. "Can I see you naked again?" he asks her later, with a lecherous grin. "As boring as a ____ funeral dirge", he called Icheb's report on Kirk. His little monologue about his first 20 minutes on the ship "Bipeds pushing buttons! Biped replacing relays!!" And of course I love Q himself, he is so much fun. "Look at how quickly you housebroke that borg drone", "pet talaxian", and so on. The plot itself was weak I thought. Why being willing to sacrifice yourself to save a friend is an example of exemplary Q-ness I have no idea. Yes its a sign that Q2 is willing to accept the consequences of his actions, but is THAT Q-ness?? Janeways truisms about good parenting didn't really resonate as much as they might have in a different story. Viewing the episode as a commentary on today's no-limit, over-indulgent parenting doesn't quite work, so I don't think that is where the writers were going with this episode. I think it was just intended to be a fun ride for the viewers, and that it was! Angela Fun. Whoever compared this to enjoying a "Nick at Night" rerun, well said. I lay back and went along for the ride, and it was a pleasant hour. At last, at last, a Janeway feast! Mmmm! Actually I chuckled at the corny "Itchy" and "Q-Ball," and I found Icheb's eagerness to make a friend of his own (apparent) age rather touching. I cracked up at Janeway sitting through that "Early Starfleet History" report (or was it a final exam in the form of a project?), and finding a way to cut the kid short before she fell asleep...without hurting his feelings. Is John DeLancie OK? Or was it the different haircut? He looked years older than he did in "The Q and the Grey." More years than have passed since then, I mean. So he has to go wherever the "little brat" goes now. A fitting punishment! A nice, light offering, and I was ready for one. Agree. Unpretentious fun with the Qs nt "Q" is for quit. But,it could have been worse... ...that's about the best I can say about this one "it could have been worse". I considered it good for a few minor laughs and that was about it. My wife and I did find ourselves chuckling. Likes: We got to see what Eric would do if he was a 'Q': Seven standing naked at her job and later Katie's feet getting kissed while nude in the bubble bath. Come on admit it, Eric, you want to kiss Captain Katie's tootsies! It's finally come to that. Even the disco scene in engineering was right out of that over-aged YAMS dreams ;^). Just kidding, Whippersnapper,...or am I? I liked the reference to Kirk at the beginning when Janeway was listening to the borg kid's presentation. Funny thing about Kirk's legacy, in *very early* TNG episodes Kirk seemed not that notable in Federation History. He seemed more like one great captain amoung many.I seem to remember back then that there were references to him like "when the Enterprise was commanded by a Captain James T. Kirk". Now in Trek lore Kirk is evidentially studied at the academy and a big part of its history that every cadet should know. A lot has changed since Kirk was refered to at the beginning of TNG. I bet someone will disagree with me on that :^). Dislikes: Q and mini-Q irritated me as expected. I always thought the idea of Q was one of the worst Trek ever came up with. A race of omnipotent jerks in charge of keeping balance in the universe, or something like that. And what's with 'Q' telling his kid not to mess with the Borg! Didn't he himself do a similar thing to Picard's Enterprise? In fact that was the first time the Borg showed up in Trek. Or perhaps the Q gave him flack for that and he was warning the kid the same could happen to him. All-in-all I hate to see these valuable last episodes wasted on comic relief mediocre plots like this. I'd rather see a buildup of main character driven stories till the end...sort of like DS9 did. Maybe even a four parter leading into the end. I know, I know, it's not going to happen. Have a nice holiday, all. Mike Icheb the Accomplice I attributed this to the fact that Icheb was (for once) interacting with someone near his own age. Normally all his companions are adults. When the other Borg-released children were still on Voyager, he was something of a pseudo-adult himself because they were so much younger. Drawing on his experiences, he basically had one of two directions to go with Junior: either act like yet another Voyager adult, or act like a kid. He went in the "kid" direction. Well, I enjoyed it. It was okay. I enjoyed "Q2" more than say "Q-less", "Human Error", or even "Repression". However, it was *slow* with no good connections between the interesting scenes. Like they fastforward from the Ready Room scene where Q Jr. (I don't like the name Q2) begged for Janeway to give him another chance to the point where Jr. approached Janeway in the Mess Hall. There were other moments as well that just didn't feel that the plot flowed well. Other than a slow plot, the rest was fine. I did enjoyed Keegan de Lancie's performance, especially with scenes involving Kate and/or his father. Other scenes I enjoyed - 1) Q kissing Janeway: I loved it! Janeway's expression was priceless! Her shock and horror of being kissed from him! 2) Janeway bathtub scene: Ever since "Resolutions", I guessed that she must have a bathtub in her bathroom on Voyager. If she said she enjoyed taking baths, she would have used her authority as captain to get a bathtub installed before Voyager departed Utopia Planetia on Mars. And sure enough, this scene in "Q2" confirmed it. I loved the scene as well, and again, I'm sure John and Kate had fun making it. 3) Scene between Janeway and Q Jr. in his quarters. It was touching, and it showed that Q was right that Janeway does have motherly touch, for she is sort of mother to 150 crewmembers. Or maybe it's Kate's motherly feelings coming out to play in the scene, for she is a RL mother. Scenes I don't like - 1) Any involving Itchy and Q-Ball. I'm sorry but I don't see any connection between Icheb and Q Jr. involving friendship. They don't click like I see between Q Jr. and Janeway and/or Q. Maybe it's because Kate and John, being best friends, know each other's families well, thus Kate knowing Keegan, just as well as his father, was able to click with him. Just as well as Kate was able to click with John in "Death Wish" and "The Q and The Grey". So it was an enjoyable episode. It was slow and the plot didn't flow smoothly between scenes, but the major scenes between Jr. and Janeway and/or Q made up for most of the episode. I rate this episode a 7 out of 10. ------------------ "I think you know me a little better than that." - Janeway to Paris, "Flesh and Blood" Icheb even as an accomplice... ...was thinly written, practically wooden--or at least more than his character allows. That was my complaint. I actually liked the idea of Icheb having a friend is own "age" for the first time. But still, it was another thing that was just there, not developed and without any resonance. I'd have liked to see that, not Icheb being a prop. Ah well. I think at this point I'm just nitting. As Q episodes go this was pretty good. They were never my favorites on TNG. I've liked the Voyager Q shows better, partially because there are fewer of them, but mostly because DeLancie and Mulgrew work so well together. And is was apparent that DeLancie's son knows Mulgrew well (wonder how many times he started to say Aunt Kate instead of Aunt Kathy?). And unlike the TNG outings at least here the crew got something in return for their help, in the form of whatever that shortcut was Q gave Janeway at the end. Someone finally remembered that Icheb should be wearing a com badge Continuity: Obviously the whole Q's learning from humans and Janeway being young Q's godmother. Also the Q's calling Neelix ____ Rodent; Janeway & bubble baths; Tuvok's PT, with the right uniforms (I don't think we've seen them since "Learning Curve"); references to Jean Luc; the judges robes from "Encounter at Farpoint" and "All Good Things". From the preview next week's show looks like another comedy. Guess they decided on a run of lighter shows before what's bound to be more dramatic episodes, with more special effects, leading up to and including the finale. I've been waiting for something like this since Q & Grey. What occurred to me after re-watching that ep, was that giving Q a kid was a serious challenge to the writers. IMO, the distinctive characteristic of 'our' Q, de Lancie senior, was childishness. The thought that an omniscient, omnipotent being would not be wise, or thoughtful, or even good-at-heart was terrifying -- and allowed for lots of fun and drama. Q was like a hyperactive, narcissistic teenager with wheels, a triple platinum credit card, and zero supervision. (My apologies to Janeway 216 and the other chronologically challenged Nebulites). Making him really, finally, absolutely grow up by turning him into a parent -- well, I thought maybe they'd written themselves into a corner. Only got to see the last 30 minutes of Q2(too bad, sounds like I missed *all* the fun), but it looks like the writers found a solution after all. But whatever did they do to John's hair?!?! Ronit To Me, Dawson has a better back than Ryan Thought that would get at least Mac to read this post. But yes, after seeing Ryan's back last night, that was the first thing that came to mind. Had the Borg corset ruined her skin--my or my. Anyway, though the episode was just OK. I did chuckle at the bathtub scene and the "Kiss" scene, but, surprisingly, the episode fell flat. Maybe it was DeLancy 2's inexperience, I don't know. Maybe I like Q as a real villian, challenging the minds of the crew, like TNG. The only episode I have really liked with Q was Death Wish, again, a challenge. Maybe the show was dumbed down for you know who demographics. Well, next week look promising, another fun non-alternate universe episode. Chat with you guys in 2 1/2 weeks. Off to the frozen North (Banff) on vacation. Ciao, Di Re: Just awful!...I was never a big Q fan, either, Jason... ...although there have been episodes that have featured the character which I enjoyed very much...but they were all TNG episodes, because that's where, I think, the character really belongs. But I did like the VOYAGER episode with the Q who wanted to die... I never really liked the idea of the Q baby, I thought it was stupid; if they had really wanted to be daring, Q could have taken an egg or some DNA from "Kathy" and had a baby with her that way...it would have been infinitely more interesting. As for my opinions of the show itself, see my other post. Mindy Ho-hum. (Again) It was lightweight and was "much ado about nothing." In my humble opinion, I think they should have gone for broad comedy, as in BRIDE OF CHAOTICA, Certainly the concept had a lot of "ha-ha" potential in it. The other option was to do it as a really heavy drama show, dark and morose and anti-heroic, but that, imho, would have been much harder. But what we got was a middlin' dramedy that couldn't even succeed at that level. This kid adjusted WAAAY too easily to being human; whereas when Q had his powers removed on TNG, and it was played for laughs, this was "so what?" He barely blinked...and he showed too much d#mn evidence of the "Wesley Syndrome." Example: this kid was a Q. How the h#ll would he know how to reprogram the holodeck? The Q eschew technology, BIG time! Terry brought up an idea to me that I completely agreed with...when Chakotay returned to the holodeck, all the "diplomats" should have been having a rollicking, knock-down fight (a la TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES) and the kid should have been in a corner pulling his hair out of his head trying to stop it and ending up with a black eye at the least--that's going for the "broad slapstick"...or, if we wanted to go heavy drama, crying his eyes out. It was a good idea to match him up with Icheb, but he should have bunked with him (Icheb isn't in the cargo area anymore, is he? I don't think so) so he could have "socialization" with someone his own age. (It could have been a double story about Icheb discovering his "funny bone" as the Q kid led him into major escapades....) The best part of the whole hour was Janeway in the tub; Q kissing her foot good-bye was great! I also liked that she didn't act like a shrinking violet, grabbing her towel and all that...she just sighed and said, "okay, what do you want?" Mature and the one really bright spot in the whole episode. I also liked Seven's "non-reaction" to her nakedness...okay, some people may say why Seven naked and not B'lanna? Again, the "Hail Seven/Ryan Syndrome." (And it might have been a good scene if he had disrobed B'lanna, especially as she is pregnant...after seeing Seven's body, he should have been curious about what a pregnant human looks likes). But be that as it may, Ryan played the scene perfectly. Neelix's "Charlie X" scene could be seen coming a mile away. Couldn't they have thought of something more original? Oh, that's right, they added the removal of the vocal cords...gee, I think the "I HAVE NO MOUTH BUT I MUST SCREAM" (an Ellison story) is a lot more frightening in its implications. Like, he's talking but nobody understands him...And I love the way Phillips plays Neelix angry...I wish we could have seen Neelix really letting the brat have it. And why would having a disco party in the engine room endanger the warp engines? You mean they never have parties in Engineering? Nobody's birthday is celebrated? So there's a party happening, so what? What happened to the "let's ignore him and he'll go away" scenario, anyway? And again, why would the warp engines suddenly be in danger of going nuclear? I know they have to be monitored, but the regular crew were still doing the job, weren't they? You mean the engines are so delicate that if you take your eyes off of them for five minutes it's KA-BOOM!time? That's news to me. Oh, forget it...I'm getting aggravated, so I'll stop now and read everybody's else posts. I may be back when I've cooled down a bit. Mindy Continuity I noticed the references to Picard and the judges' robes, too. And speaking of continuity, what about the mention...err...discussion...err...expounding of James T. Kirk in Ichev's report at the beginning? Sherry I don't think you're "nitting", D'Alaire. As I say in my post, it could have been a fun episode with Icheb discovering his "funny bone." To me Icheb did come off as "just another adult," even if he did go off in the Flyer with the kid. They could have called the episode "Boy's Town" or "Boys Will Be Boys"...I think it would have been more interesting to see the two of them running around the ship pulling pranks and getting into all sorts of trouble. And then it could have climaxed with the Flyer being stolen, etc...EXCEPT that the alien shouldn't have been Dad...the alien should have been real...or why bring an alien into it at all? They could have stolen the Flyer for a joyride and crashed or whatever. Mindy Mindy Okay, that was my other big LIKE...the opening with Kirk's "story"... Maybe it's just because I've recently seen some of the best episodes of TOS, but I loved it...and it makes sense to me tht Kirk would be in the history books...first of all, he is (and this is Roddenberry canon) the youngest person ever to be given command of a Starship; even if, 90 years later, he isn't, he was still the FIRST youngest person, y'know what I mean? He was also the first Captain to see a Romulan, the first human to know about (and PARTICIPATE in) Ponn F'aar, Captain of the first ship to break the time barrier (even if it was by accident), a Captain who was the first to successfuly steal the Romulan cloaking device, an Admiral who saved Earth twice, first against V'ger and then with this same band had the b@lls and desperate courage to go back in time and "repopulate the species, i.e., humpback whales, thereby saving the whole friggin' planet! On the other hand, this man was a decorated Admiral who led a group of mutineers to steal a Starship and destroy it, who was accussed of assassinating the Klingon Chancellor, who left a woman "barefoot and pregnant,"...need I go on? Certainly he is the most coloful Starfleet captain (that we know of so far, anyway), and his escapades would certainly merit more than one book... HOW'RE YOU GONNA KEEP HIM DOWN ON THE FARM? The Official Biography of Admiral James T. Kirk or YOU'LL NEVER EAT LUNCH IN STARFLEET AGAIN! The Unauthorized Biography of James T. Kirk or FROM ORGANIA TO KHITOMER The Klingon-Terran Relationship in the 23rd Century (with a peface and afterword by Captain James T. Kirk) See what I mean? Mindy Sometimes, I just like to chuckle. I know, "chuckling" is so... so... "anti"-Voyager! Afterall, we only have 6 more eps left before the finale, and we should be doing BIG things! Solve the Vidian Phage... (Oops. Thats been done. Reawaken Torres' childhood demons and put to sleep her Klingon race hatred... (Golly, that's been done too! How about teach Seven a thing or two about the "opposite" sex... (If 8472 really has 5 sexes... how do you decide who's "opposite...." and what the heck are those other 3 for anyway??? No... we both know I'm just being silly... and to tell the truth, I don't mind the occasional "silly" episode. Especially when it throws in so many "little" things that make me smile. First...and ever foremost... it gave me Janeway. In her "many faceted" glory. Gently funny with Icheb, riotously so with Q during the "kiss" (Hey what IS this? Next to NOTHING for 6 years, and in the spate of 8 weeks Janeway gets bussed by Q AND buffed by Jaffen? Angered on the bridge, peeved in the bath, righteous in the earlier sickbay scene, and insightful in the latter sickbay scene. I must admit... the "righteous" in me smiled when Captain Kate not only went after Q jr with those two security guards, it HOWLED when she (without so much as a "by your leave") removed those undeserved pips from his collar. Oh, how many times have I wanted Picard to do just that to "Q"! For a very Janeway/guest star oriented ep... I liked how we saw "the rest" of the cast. I loved seeing "Uncle Tom" take Icheb out for a spin in the Flyer. Hey, I thought that was what "Holodecks" were for! "Practice, practice. practice." Yet, Q jr's little comment about being careful cause he's "mortal" was right on the money. No matter how much practice you get... eventually you have to try the "real thing". "For everything, Mr Saavik... there is a first time." Sigh. I guess Icheb is "glad" he's not "dating" Lt Torres anymore. It must be more fun to have Tom as your mentor/pilot instructor than as your romantic rival!
Speaking of romantic rivals... was I the only one who noticed that Q2 had good taste? I mean really... the first woman he chased after on board was B'ELANNA! He ran after Seven only after BLT so successfully ignored him!
I must admit, despite the obvious YAM factor involved... Seven "was" the obvious person to be subjected to that "sight gag". I certainly didn't expect her to "cover up/scamper away", nor did she. Served "him" right! (What did Elinor used to say... no one can demean you without your consent?... Something like that.) I agree with the poster that loved all the little nods to the "Continuity Gods". Chakotay trying to teach him the art of diplomacy. Tuvok putting him through his paces. Neelix trying to get on his "good side", but not hesitating to "rub his nose in it" once he got on Neelix's bad side! Paris playing shuttle flying teacher, the freaking BATHTUB! (Hey Look how excited I was when I realized the "fake door" in Janeway's ready room was actually USED twice this season! Hey... But man does not live on Continuity alone... she also thrives on humor! Yeah, I would try to get on Janeway's good side TOO, Icheb, by quoting all the times HERO KIRK broke the Prime Directive!
"I wonder if its too late to call Jean Luc?" I nearly CROAKED on that one! Janeway's "Calgon, take me away" fantasy being interrupted so abruptly... and expectedly! (Hey just cuz I know its coming doesn't mean I don't think it was funny! At least he "Stayed" in his uniform. The tootsie kiss... however... I was NOT expecting!) The "housebreak the drone comment" followed quickly by Janeway's comment "that took YEARS!" The "favor" between buddies... "I'll do it on one condition... you don't call my Itchy where anyone can hear it"! (He has a reputation, don't you know!) The end... I liked the end. Yeah, I half expected it, but I still liked it. I especially liked it because Qjr had to be TOLD to go face the music over Icheb... but once he did, once he realized he was being let off the hook, and Icheb would be saved... He realized on his own that someone else needed to be saved. Janeway. It wasn't the "apology" for his actions that was when Q jr offered his life for his "friend". It was his offer to take the Punishment the alien was reserving for Janeway... the "responsible" adult on board. Could be torture, or imprisonment... No matter. Q jr realized his actions HAD consequences... and that the one who was trying to save HIM all week would end up paying an ultimate price... and that was wrong. And she didn't have to TELL him it was wrong. The "Q" as a race have run their race in Trekdom... if all they ever will be are "pests". With this ep... we have a "nice coda" to the story... and for that, I'm pleased. At least, I'll never sit and wonder..."What ever happened to that adorable baby in 'The Q & The Grey'?" D47 They would never have undermined Janeway's mentoring skills that way, Mindy Icheb is supposed to be a MODEL of the benefits of emulating Janeway, and i must admit I like his ramrod honorability... then again, im with you in wanting to have seen more of a hooligan romp! david g I enjoyed the ep, but you make all the right points, Mindy Still, any ep that mentions Kirk idolatrously and has Janeway doing that hand thing while covered in soap sudz is ok by me! and call me a little sicko but my Slashy tendencies were nicely stroked here, as well... david g Star Trek: Vaudville Between this week's episode, and the preview for next week, I'm sure they'll relable Star Trek as a comedy and not a drama. Comedy and laughter has it's place, even in Trek. But to come off a long rerun stint with a show like this? Sorry, I like Q but I was even disappointed. And I'm not going to go into how I think they've ruined the Q Continum about as much as they've ruined the Borg. I guess I'm being spoiled, or my tastes are changing. I'd much prefer to see a nice gripping storyline, something to really look forward to week after week than some episodic fluff. I can't believe how badly I'm speaking. I have to go now and wash my mouth out with Raktajino or something... Shawnster (still alive) Hey, Shawnster, you are alive! I was thinking about sending out a search party to find your body just yesterday. I gotta agree with you about Q2. This show is a microcosm of Trek old-age flaws. They keep visiting and revisiting the same characters/aliens until everything was fun/menacing about them is completely gone. Q is one Trek character I didn't need closure on. I was thinking the same thing. One rather thinks of backs like elbows but there really are aesthetic differences! And I thought Ryan's was noticeably unattractive for a back. Makes you think that without the corset, she might be saggy and paunchy Re: Why Seven naked and not B'Elanna? I think the answer to that is obvious. From what I've heard, the fun thing about that scene was the fact that there was no response from "The Victim" whatsoever. Now if that "Victim" would have been B'Elanna... do you think she wouldn't have reacted? Do you think that she'd just stand there and think "Oh, okay, so my clothes are gone, too bad?"? Cuz I don't think so.... She would have ripped the poor human Q's guts out... And ruined the scene with it. Or at least (for the people who have a secret Q2-deathwish) taken the laugh out of the scene. You are so right, Eric. Most of the way through the episode, I was wondering, "What are they doing using up one of their last eight episodes with this DRIVEL?" For the first time, I actually asked myself out loud "Why am I still watching this show?" The show I used to love is gone. Now I'm just hanging on so no one can call me a quitter. 216 Lack of originality . . . that was the main problem I had. I felt that I'd seen all this before, and not just on "Deja Q". It was simply a standard "Boy Visits School of Hard Knocks and Graduates with Flying Colors" story. Q jr.'s learning was too rapid, his fall too cliched, his redemption too pat. And of course Daddy didn't give a . . . never mind. I did not read the plot summary, and I still predicted half the plot twists. That's not something that makes me happy. 216 Q2 gave me Deja Q. Risking yourself to save a friend has always been exemplary Q-ness. Remember, that was what saved Q in his own "Oh My God I'm A Human" episode. Also, it was Dad testing Junior, and he may only have been using the same standards that the Q used on him. I wish we could have seen Suzie Plakson's character . . . but at least the mention of her was IC. Way back when they did "The Q and the Grey" someone said not to look forward to another Q episode . . . because how are you going to explain the fact that an omnipotent, ageless, unchanging being is balding? Well, they should have stuck to their guns about that one, because de Lancie the Elder looked terrible. He's turning into quite the ChromeDome, he's getting some serious wrinkles, and he's obviously put on several pounds. Then again, "Encounter at Farpoint" was what, fourteen years ago? I bet Keegan wasn't even born then. (Of course, Keegan probably was, because teenage roles tend to be cast as 18 to look younger because of SAG and child labor laws considerations.) Anyway I think I have enumerated about the bad of this episode long enough. Of course, imho there is lots of bad to rant about. Let's hear some good for a change! Okay, Q jr. and Janeway's interacting were cute, especially the part where he told you "You don't have unlimited control of space, (something), and time. I do. That means I make the rules around here." Of course, later she turns that right back around on him! And Q himself was wonderful as always. I just wish Wardrobe had been a little kinder to him! de Lancie and Mulgrew are old friends, and it was fun seeing them in the bubble bath together. They have always played off each other very well. I didn't see the part with Neelix in sick bay, as I was making dinner at the time, but Neelix's revenge was sweet. This episode had its moments, but moments don't necessarily make an episode. The disco party just made me want to gag myself with a silver plated shovel, and the ending was so cliched -- but I've already ranted about that. 216 I had the same impression Seven wasn't embarrassed or angry. Her non-response was the whole point: stripping her didn't draw any kind of reaction. Q Jr. got off the hook, as he wouldn't with B'Elanna, but neither did he get any kind of exciting response. On the other hand, if he had stripped B'Elanna, she might have ahem made us rethink the whole idea of a safe, punishment-free Q. As we all know, Seven is often presented to appeal to the sex-crazed younger males--which is the age Q Jr's development has reached. A woman as pregnant as B'Elanna just wouldn't seem as tempting to such a kid. Sherry I hope not!!!!! Hi I'd thought I'd return before the end of the show. I'd have to agree with everyone that I have read so far, I have never been a fan of Q. I can't abide his arrogance, and I have generally avoided any show with Q. IMHO Q has appeared emasculated whenever he has been with Kate (Kathy more recently). He either likes Kate, and hates Picard. Perhaps Picard was a better dualing partner for Q, I don't know. I neither liked the show nor did I dislike it. It was just fluff. My favorite scene the party in engineering, enjoying the dance of the Hirogen ROTF. My next favorite was Kate's bubble bath with fully clothed Q joining her. I shall return. TKS Voyager Author UnCovered ! Re-watching Q2, I realized what the episode was really about: the unmasking of the guy who's really been writing the shows for the last few years. Think about it: given plenty of leisure time and omnipotence, what does Q Jr. like to do? - gaze at Seven's naked body - watch random space battles - bring the Borg in just for the heck of it Sound familiar to anyone? Even when his powers are taken away, Junior is still Junior. He - rewrites character parameters - has no interest in history - still begs to see Seven naked Does this ring a bell? Guess instead of his name in the credits he demanded a show starring himself ; after all, Menosky got 'Muse' to espouse his theory of writing. Surely a Q should go one better, and have a show that stars not only his writing but himself. This leads to several urgent questions: 1) will Q give interviews like the other Voyager writers? 2) can a member of the Continuum also be a member of a union? If so, will he strike along with the other writers? 3) what did he think of the wrap party? Ronit Ha! Pretty funny, Ronit. Frankly, it's been so long since I watched an entire Voyager episode that I was amazed at how entertaining I found this one. It wasn't Eugene O'Neil by any stretch of the imagination, but I wasn't bored, and I laughed out loud a few times...in places where I was *supposed* to laugh, which is something of a relief. And casting is to be commended for finding a boy who really looked like he could be John de Lancie's son. Huh, Ginny, you *do* know he *is* de Lancie's son. Don't you? No, I didn't. I hadn't read anything, at all, about the episode before I watched it, and I didn't pay much attention to the opening credits. Does he have the same last name? His name is Keegan de Lancie.
