"Who would have thought that this eclectic group of voyagers could actually become a family. Starfleet, Maquis, Klingon, Talaxian, hologram, Borg... even Mr Paris." |
Heroes And Demons
"Think of this as your first away mission, Doctor." -- Kathryn Janeway Jules When this one first aired, I remember thinking - "Oh, NO. Not another one of those STUPID holodeck episodes!" (I had cringed at most of the ones TNG and DS9 offered. They just struck me as, well, cheesy. Not all of them...but most.) I changed my mind rather quickly, though, because the actress portraying Freya delighted me with her performance. She struck just the right note to help me suspend my disbelief, and I loved the way she pulled the Doctor into her mythical "world." I also loved Janeway's reaction when she was told that Harry might be (apparently was) dead. Not just disbelief; refusal to accept! This was still early days with a character (Janeway) I liked, and wanted to go on liking more and more. "Heroes and Demons" kept me on track quite nicely. Nice little moments: Tom's face when he brought the Doctor out minus a holographic arm. Freya leading the warriors in a chant of "Hail Schweitzer!" (a scene that's positively camp). The Doctor "boasting of his deeds," to the disgust of some of his hosts and the bafflement of others. One of the best episodes ever? No. A good, enjoyable episode? You bet. Not a favorite, but pleasant enough. Terry helped, as did TAing for a Medieval lit course. This was an ep in which Janeway appears to be treating Doc like a real crewman...her inspirational speech. i miss those. Garrett Wang complained that theyd done him up in medieval garb for hours but never really showed him in his duds. a slow ep but sweet souled. dg definitely in my top 20 I love Marjorie Monaghan (she really deserves a regular gig) and she was perfect as Freya. It was also a great Doc-centric ep, before that concept got a tad overused. tf I liked this one. I only vaguely remembered this episode from when it originally aired so I guess I didn't think much of it at the time. But, when I got my CH tape and watched the episode again, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this episode was quite good. Like most of the season one episodes, this one is even better in hindsight. Vickie Its interesting seeing the doctor really start to go beyond his programming, into areas that had nothing to do with medical matters or interacting with crew members, especially when we know just how far he does evolve. Chakotay's discussion with Tuvok about myths also has more impact after knowing his anthropology background. Janeway (I like her hair better here than the bun) and Torres working together on a science project Something I've noticed in re-watching the early episodes, as well as on Enterprise so far, is that there's no obvious B Plot. While there are several story lines they're all related to the main story, not grafted on as fillers the way many later season B Plots seemed.
Paraphrasing from memory... "I'd like to cite you by name in the ship's log... I understand you've chosen one?" "I had... but the last time I heard it used, wasn't pleasant." Sigh. Loved the ep. Loved Janeway scheming with Torres to "do" Harry out of his holotime. Loved Chak and Tuvok working together instead of butting heads. Loved Chak's opinion about Vulcan literature.
Loved the "feel" of interacting with a holonovel, as they conversed with Freye and figured out what probably happened to Harry. Loved the fear exhibited by the Doctor in his heartfelt conversation with Kes, not to mention her counseling. Loved Tom working as Holomedic to the Hologram, not to mention the fact that it was his idea (IIRC) to send in the Doc in the first place. Loved Doc's interactions with the holocharacters... whether it was on Freya's speculation on where he ranked in his home society after discovering he was a master of herblore (stay away from those Mushrooms, guys!) if not a master of storytelling and sword fighting. Loved the fact that he's totally clueless to her romantic overtures, and yet falls for her in the limited way his season 1 sensibilities will allow him to fall.
"I die happy... with your name on my lips... 'Lord Sweitzer'". Sigh. Hey, can I help I'm a sucker for "Chick Flicks"? Loved the final talk with Captain Janeway... She really was able to enter their psyches and awaken their souls to new possibilites, wasn't she?
